For the love of hellebores

In the most neglected corner of the field - which is saying something - are the hellebores. Nestled in an overgrown bed of weeds beneath the hawthorn hedge, I forget all about them from May to January. And then without any fanfare, they do this.

It’s like being knocked over by a feather!

They’re not the easiest cut flower, pick them at the right stage or you’ll have the saddest droop in your vase, but they seem very happy to be ignored throughout droughts, floods and freezes so I’m very grateful to have them on these dark winter days…

And like aquilegia they remind me of the Flower Fairies!
