My Workplace

I work with the changing seasons, the weather, the soil, the nuances of geology, the whimbles of plant varieties, the challenges of germination; in short this work i do is immersed in nature. And I believe strongly that as our modern world slips further away from nature, there is an internal need for people to connect to it.

Why? To see that perfection and imperfection coexist. To see that tiny seed produce magnificence and then die. To watch an overwintered plant emerge from months of wet, cold, hostility. To feel the earth warm in spring. Feel the frost in the air before you scrape it off your car. It’s all incredibly life affirming and when the whole entire world seems to have erupted with pain, sadness, anger and injustice it really helps me rationalise things. See nature continue unabated.

That’s not to say that it will never be enough to appease those big issues of injustice, hypocrisy, famine, crisis and enable me to turn my back - I wouldn’t have been so outspoken about chemical use and air miles if it was! - but it does help reduce the mental angst. It’s very difficult to see so many problems in communities across the world isn’t it? And by reconnecting to our wonderful natural world it is humbling, you don’t want to hurt it and add to the angst. Indeed protecting it becomes your job.

Best get back outside!
