Hello! Who We Are…
Hello!
Lots of new followers on instagram and Facebook recently - THANK YOU! - and so I thought I should show my face and welcome you to our squares!
This photo is very apt, because I’m very much behind the flowers here at Cumberland Flower Farm. My name is Harriet and growing and selling seasonal, sustainable flowers is my business. I do the majority of the growing and arranging (and admin/correspondence!), with loving support from my husband Martyn who helps me with infrastructural stuff. From time to time I bring in paid people to do specific jobs - floristry, website and design, and occasionally labour on the field.
I started growing flowers on our allotment in 2018 and we are now in our 4th year on our smallholding, which is near to our home between Cockermouth and Workington, Cumbria. We grow flowers using methods that build soil health and biodiversity, without chemicals, on our offgrid site. Last year we calculated that our carbon footprint was around 2.4 tonsCo2 (mostly source 3 emissions) and because of the number of trees we plant each year we’re technically carbon neutral, but we strive to reduce our emissions and are always looking at how best to do things so that they’re using the least resources, be that energy or water.
I’m talking about our environmental impact because it’s central to our business and so vital that we all start thinking about what we buy and how it’s made. Most flowers in the U.K. are imported, their carbon footprint is huge, and switching to our flowers will reduce your carbon footprint significantly. (You can Google ‘carbon footprint of flowers’ and a blog I wrote is one of the highest ranked articles. Read that for more info!!)
Our sustainable flowers are seriously beautiful though! Whether they’re a pick-me-up for the home at the end of the week or decorating your very special wedding day, we work so hard to provide you with joyful, uplifting blooms!
We appreciate your support here on social media, and occasionally write a newsletter too which you can subscribe to on our website. There’s lots more info on there about us too!
Thanks again for your support. All the comments, likes and shares mean a lot.
Thank you!
