British Food Standards (and Radishes)
There have been some reassurances from government - DEFRA in particular - that the standard of the food sold in the country won’t be affected by or used as leverage in Brexit trade negotiations which is great, but if you still want to voice the importance this is to you there is a NFU petition to sign.
Jamie Oliver has also written a great article about it. The NFU outline the issues too. As a grower in a sector with no government standards* (!) there’s a lot to be said for them. So please seasonal, local, sustainable, British produce lovers, please sign!
We’ve been picking radish and lettuce for a few weeks now. The boys are pretty ambivalent to lettuce (although Seth loves the crunchy stuff) but we’ve had a breakthrough with radish; Chopped into little pink chunks and added to tuna mayo, alongside (all or any of) salad onion, sweet pepper, pickled gherkin and tinned sweetcorn it is snaffled up in wraps with usual tomato/cucumber and I sneak a lot of additional veg into lunch. (The power of mayo!) It looks so pretty too.
Once introduced, they’ve had radish on its own too... “because it is yummy in the tuna”. Horrah! Funny how some veg just takes a bit of an extra push... we call it ‘food adventuring’ to encourage trying new things. But radish, I mean, Peter Rabbit loved it! What’s not to love?! Happy Sunday! .
