Our Trusted British Suppliers
Trust: if you have a business that has ethical and sustainable values, trusting your suppliers is very important. These hyacinths are grown in Britain and saying that takes trust. I didn’t grow them and I have to trust who I buy them from.
The definition of ‘grown in Britain’ is that it is substantially grown in this country, so in this case the bulb has been brought here from Holland and the flower grown here. This is the case with a lot of crops originating from seeds, plug plants, corms, tubers and trees. These things may not have originated here but their crop is grown here.
I know these hyacinths were grown here because my trusted supplier Helen at Evolve Flowers commissioned them specially from one of her growers.
My businesses story is entwined with Helen’s because i met her just before she started to supply other florists, at The Garden Museum‘s first #britishflowerweek competition in 2018. Our businesses have developed alongside / in connection and we chat relatively regularly and I trust her. She is passionate. Determined. Like me, motivated to prove the naysayers wrong. Outspoken. (Also like me). And funny. We get on But I also really admire her commitment to change the floristry industry, to make more British flowers available to florists, and when she found out that the hyacinths she believed to be British weren’t last year, she commissioned her own trial of hydroponically grown hyacinths to ensure her supply was.
How brilliant is that!
Sadly there have been hyacinths sold as British in the last few months that weren’t. Some suppliers acted immediately when they found out, others less quickly. For businesses who only work with British Flowers I can imagine some are feeling quite let down.
If you’re a florist looking for beautiful hyacinths, please get in touch with Helen. She’s got lots of stunning blue and white ones. I’ll be using them in our Mothers Day bouquets and wreaths, weddings and funeral arrangements.
Thank you Helen for going above and beyond and being so trustworthy and forward thinking. Here’s to a beautiful week of British flowers
