Homegrown Gypsophila

Gypsophila is ubiquitous with weddings; available year round from international growers (and from June-October from the large scale British grower!) it has become a go-to for florists and couples. Seasonless, scentless (in fact the opposite, a bit wiffy in a big bunch!), and a little stiff, as well as being over used, I’ve avoided it. Until now!

I’ve a bed of 10 plants in the polytunnel to see how productive and useful it is here in Cumbria. We trial a few new things each year, and there are some compelling reasons to try this; its popularity, its durability and its its flexibility- it can fill big spaces, add pretty texture easily and be cut down into small stems for buttonholes, flower crowns etc. (things that can function in different ways like this are really useful!)

It hasn’t enjoyed the cold, dull conditions this summer, but with the hot, bright few days last week we’re finally able to snip a few first stems …

🌸 I went with a pink variety. (Obviously)
💚 No chemicals used; fed with some homemade seaweed fertilizer.
💡No additional lighting or heat used
💣 it’s slug resistant .. a massive plus this year!!!!

So Cumbrian pink Gypsophila… what do you think?!
